Wood protection coatings for professionals & do-it-yourselfers

Wood is a living, natural building material that absorbs and releases moisture. This "work" creates an ideal attack surface for fungi, insects, wind and weather. Persistent sources and shrinkage carries the risk of deformation and cracking. That is why it is important to protect the wood from these influences. A coating designed and maintained with the right materials regulates the absorption of moisture.

Wood, which is used for exterior cladding on houses, no longer has the same quality as before. Logging takes place all year round, even during the growing season. Due to favorable conditions, such as plantation cultivation and fertilization, the wood grows faster – with visibly wider annual rings, which reduces the natural resistance of the wood.

More and more wood-based materials are used outdoors. However, not every wooden panel is suitable for an external coating. Sea pine plates and OSB plates, for example, are not suitable for further coating.

In the case of multiplex or multi-layer plates, the moisture stress in the outdoor area has a particular effect on the upper top layer and the edge area. The top layer and as a result the coating can tear: moisture gets under the coating and into the wooden plate. The top cover should therefore be at least 6 to 7 mm.

Wood consists of 25 to 30 % lignin, which kites the cellulose fibers. UV light breaks lignin in the near-surface area and discolors the wood. The weather washes out the degraded lignin, along the fiber direction a relief-like muster forms. The white cellulose fibres appear silvery-grey.

Planed surfaces are often compacted and therefore not very receptive, just like peeled, smooth round trunks. Good substrates for coatings are finely sawn or ground surfaces, provided that it was not too ripped up by the processing process (woolly) and the grinding dust was carefully removed from the wooden pores.

... is a highly effective cleaning agent on an alkaline basis: for untreated, painted or greyed wood surfaces as well as materials coated with oil or synthetic resin (wood, concrete, plaster facades, etc.). It effectively dissolves dirt, grease, mineral oil, soot, nicotine as well as surface fungi and mattes oil and resin-coated surfaces. PINGO Kraftvask contains silicates, complexing agents, biodegradable emulsifiers and cleaning active ingredients.

... is used to clean brushes, paint rollers and brushes. The micro-emulsion is based on fatty acids and dissolves the colour thoroughly and tool-friendly.

JOTUN Penselrens is well suited to remove acrylate and alkyd paints. After a thorough rinsing with water, the bristles become soft and supple again. Penselrens is odour-mild and biodegradable.

... is a solvent-containing, colourless wood primer for painting – with transparent UV protection. The primer contains Chinese wood oils that stabilize the wood surfaces. VISIR Oljegrunning clear is easy to process, protects against blueness, rot and fungal infestation and is suitable for new and old woods outdoors. The primer penetrates deeply and thus causes a high weather resistance (3-month weather protection). It protects against UV irradiation and fungal infestation and is free of insecticides.

... is a water-based (alky resin base) wood protection primer, with very good penetration behaviour. The glazing pigmentation in the wood colour is easy to process, protects against blueness, rot and fungal infestation and is suitable for new and old woods outdoors. The primer produces a high weather resistance (3-month weather protection) and has a stabilizing effect on old, greyed woods.

... is a water-based wood protection paint specially developed for extremely stressed surfaces such as window frames and doors. Wood coatings for these areas must have a limited elongation capacity, as they are exposed to special climatic conditions and high mechanical stresses. DEMIDEKK Ultimate Fönster uses the proven AMA technology (Alkyd resin Modified Acrylat). AMA combines the positive properties of both binders – good penetration, high gloss and colour stability, and optimal UV and weather protection – without losing important properties (such as high block strength, good course, short drying times).

... is an environmentally friendly, water-based, opaque wood colour in matt look. Wood grains are particularly highlighted by the absence of fillers. ... is a solvent-containing wood protection paint based on long-oilal alkyd resin. The high-quality raw materials (e.g. Chinese wood oil) penetrate deep, so that the paint adheres very well to the substrate. The long-oiled binder gives DEMIDEKK Oljetäckfärg excellent stretchability. The highly pigmented colour provides perfect UV protection.

Together with the primer VISIR Oljegrunning, the wood protection paint can be used as a completely solvent-based paint system, which is recommended for difficult substrates: e.g. for woods rich in content (such as oak, larch, Douglas fir) or light shades, where visible blood flow is to be expected. But even with very dark old paints, a solvent-based alkyd resin system has advantages over an acrylic-based system.

... is solvent-containing, protects the wood and preserves its structure. In addition to the matte surface and its excellent course, the alkyd glaze impresses with its water-repellent effect as well as its high UV resistance. The glaze does not flick and tear, but is eroded by weathering. The wood can be reworked in the planned renovation cycle without time-consuming and cost-intensive preparation of the substrate. Cleaning or light awe-making of the surface is sufficient.

... is a water-dilutable hybrid glaze based on AMA technology (Alkyd Modified Acrylat). The combination combines the properties of both binders in one product. The glazing, which is permanently sticking to the coating substrate, provides excellent UV protection. The hue and gloss of the paint are retained for longer. The DEMIDEKK Structural Lasyr can compensate well for tensions caused by the swelling and shrinkage behaviour of wood substrates. The paint film is flexible and prevents micro-cracks in the surface. The hybrid glaze also protects against fungal infestation and is durable for an above-average length of time.

... is a silk mat, water-based acrylic glaze and free of pollutants (100 % solvent-free). The glazing is suitable for colourless or coloured diffusion-open paints in the interior, especially for components made of coniferous and hardwood, such as panels, strips, ceiling cladding, wall panelling. DEMIDEKK Panellakk is also ideal for colouring / lasing wooden floors, which are then sealed with parquet lacquer.

The glaze creates a silk mat surface and offers high UV protection, which significantly delays yellowing of the wood paint and thus the renovation. The glazing layer is tested for saliva and welding fastness and meets the highest requirements. Panellakk dries quickly (after 30 minutes the paint is dust-dry, can be coated after about 1 hour) and can be processed comfortably.
